COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORTS

JUNIOR FIRST TEAM

VETTS 2

Northants Veteran 2nds proved the most successful of our County Championship teams when they finished the season with a trio of eight two victories to take second place in Division 3B.

Following two defeats in the earlier series of matches all three of their final encounters had to be won if they were to occupy second place behind Warwickshire. Against their Norfolk counterparts Chris Ross, Gary Webb and Kevin Bird were always in control with the Ross/Webb duo and Bird, joined by Pauline Hart, adding valuable doubles.

The same quartet faced Bucks and again the three men took all their singles. Similarly the Ross/Webb combination added the doubles with Bird/Hart completing an eight two victory. The closest call was for Webb who beat the Bucks No.1 12-10 in the fifth.

A change of personnel saw Terry Cardwell and Gary Deacon replacing Ross and Bird against Herts but the outcome was identical, two singles each for the men, a Deakin/Hart doubles and a fifth end doubles success for Webb and Deakin.

Level on points with Essex 4ths, Northants ended with a three game advantage and second place in the table.

VETTS 3

After gaining just a single draw in their opening four fixtures in Veterans Division 4A, Northants Veteran 3rds began the final session more in hope than expectation.

The team started well against Leicester 3rds with a narrow defeat for Chris Gibbons followed by straight game successes from Gerald Henson and Richard Bashford.

The mixed doubles was lost in four ends but Gibbons then won in straight games to keep Northants ahead. Bashford and Wendy Hancock led by two games to nil in the final doubles but Leicester recovered to win and take the match seven three.

In their final encounter Northants made a superb start with Gibbons, Bashford and Henson taking the first three singles before Cambridgeshire replied with three wins of their own.

The mens doubles was close but not close enough. Then Gibbons hit peak form to level the match. Bashford was beaten and though Gibbons and Hancock led the final rubber by two games to nil, Cambridge 3rds, looking for a first win of the campaign, fought back to take three in a row and complete a six four success.
