J & K Transport Top 10 Tournament 2008 |
The 2008 Top 10 tournament took place at the Weavers Centre in Wellingborough for the first time on Sunday 28 September. The boys' and girls' tournaments were held simultaneously from 9.30am to 1.00pm. Two boys made their excuses for non attendance but the remaining eight competed well to win places in the County Junior and Cadet teams. The final order was, strangely, exactly the same as the players' County Ranking order.

JORDAN DAINTY - TOP 8 CHAMPION 2007

Jordan lifts the Top 8 title
There were shocks aplenty as the Northants Top 8s moved towards an unexpected conclusion. In the boys section Robert Griffin maintained his recent fine form to account for the higher ranked Nick Smalley and Nathan Thompson. Then Sam Wildman took advantage of a Friday night practice session to gain a surprise 11-5,11-3,9-11,11-6 victory over Jack Coleman.
In the final match of this competition Daniel Smalley, the county-ranked No.38 faced Jordan Dainty (104). The match ebbed and flowed with Dainty taking the first end 11-4, Smalley levelling 11-9, Dainty going back in front 11-6 only for Smalley to take the fourth 11-8. In the fifth-end decider Dainty soon took control to win 11-4 and so lift the title he so narrowly missed last season.
Ten year-old Sam Mabey performed well without ultimate success. However, he can be well satisfied with his achievements at national level. He has recently moved up 29 places to stand ninth in the national rankings for Under 11s and is the youngest ever county player to reach the top 10 in this age group.

Congratulations
to Top 12 Invitation Tournament winner Matt Carter. In a fiercely
fought competition three players, Matt Carter, Jordan Dainty and
Dan Smalley, each finished with ten wins out of eleven matches.
Under the rules of the competition we then had to look at who won
when the players met and each had beaten one of the other two. Matt,
the highest County ranked player in the tournament, won very closely,
by one game in fact, on the best games difference. Had we specified
that we would only compare those who finished equal it would also
have been close but the result would have been exactly the same.
Matt, Jordan and Dan all finished up 2-2 in games and the points
difference in their games were Matt (+3), Jordan (-1) and Dan (-2).
It only goes to emphasise the old adage you play for every point!
