J & K TRANSPORT TOP 10 TOURNAMENT 2008

The 2008 Top 10 tournaments took place at the Weavers Centre in Wellingborough for the first time on Sunday 28 September. The Boys' and Girls' tournaments were held simultaneously from 9.30am to 1.00pm. This was a hard fought tournament where County team places were decided by the final order which was as follows:

Rachel lifts the Top 8 title

In the Girls Top 8, much of the interest centred on Gina Stedman, nationally-ranked No. 53 in the Under-13s, who has recently moved to the county from Somerset. Jordan Wood had been expected to challenge Charlotte Binley for the title. But a shoulder injury prevented her from appearing - so Binley's only serious rival appeared to be Stedman.

Nine-year old Nicole Bird was the youngest competitor and played well but needs more time while Kettering's unranked Bethany Tyler won three of her seven matches.

With three matches to play Binley, Stedman and Harborough's Rachel Thompson all held 100% records and the contest was wide open. At this point Stedman beat Thompson 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 15-13. But then came the shock of the day when Thompson dispatched Binley in straight games 11-7, 11-8, 11-6.Binley then accounted for Stedman 11-8, 11-7, 13-11. But the game Thompson won against Stedman was the one that gave Harborough's Rachel Thompson the Girls Top 8 crown.

Congratulations to Charlotte Binley who won this year's Top 8 Invitation Tournament. Based on the County rankings Charlotte was ranked fourth in the competition but won all her matches to take the title for the first time.
