     Report

On Sunday 2nd March 2008, students from around the County gathered at Weavers Leisure Centre, Wellingborough, to compete in the Northamptonshire Schools Individual Table Tennis Championships.  The Age groups are U11, 13, 16 and 19 Boys and Girls and the winners go on to represent their County at the National Championships in Doncaster on 26 April 2008.

U11 Girls:

Nicole Bird, Redwell School, Wellingborough, England ranked 17 in U11’s, proved too strong for the other competitors and eased through her group as did Katie Tombs, Cedar Road School, Northampton.  The 2 met in the final with Nicole winning in straight sets.

U11 Boys:

There were some close games in the group contest of this section but it was Tom Wildman, Little Harrowden and Ed Luck also from Little Harrowden who reached the final.  This was a repeat of last years contest and the result was the same with Tom winning.

U13 Girls:

Lauren Armstrong, Weston Favell School, Northampton and Rachael Brown, Sponne School, Towcester, eased through their groups to meet in the final.  Lauren retained her title 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-6.

U13 Boys:

A total of 9 competitors entered this age group, divided into 3 groups which resulted in a 3 way final.  This was always going to be close and as Joe Burrows, Duston School, Aaran Ark, Duston School and Leon Chan, Caroline Chisholm School all know each other and practice together.  The 1st match between Joe and Aaran proved a nail biter with Joe just getting the upper hand 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10. Leon then got the upper hand against Joe in 4 and the decisive game saw Aaran defeat Leon in straight sets.  On count back Aaran won the Final, to retain his title and Leon was 2nd.

U16 Girls:

Jordan Wood retained her title in this round robin competition with Rachael Thompson as runner up.  Jordan is a regular member of the County Junior and Senior Squads.

U16 Boys:

With 19 competitors, this was the largest and possibly the most evenly contested with several possible winners in the draw.  The 1st semi-final saw Wollaston’s Jack Coleman up against Bishop Stopford’s Nathan Thompson.  Thompson emerged the winner by 3 sets to 1.  The 2nd semi-final saw Mereway’s Robert Griffin play Sam Wildman from Sir Christopher Hatton.  Wildman proved victorious and went on to defeat Thompson in the final 7-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8.

U19 Girls:

Charlotte Binley from Southfields School for Girls, Kettering was awarded the title in the absence of any other competitor.  However Charlotte is worthy holder of the title as she is a regular member of the County Junior and Senior squads.

U19 Boys:

A round robin event with 5 players and no one doubting the eventual winner before a ball was played – Chris Doran, England Junior ranked – 7. The contest went to form and Dan Smalley was runner up with Jordan dainty taking 3rd place.

Doran will be hoping for a change of luck in the National Finals this year having lost to the No 1 seed and eventual winner for the past 2 years.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the competitors for their exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship in what was one of the best competitions for years.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL COMPETITORS IN THE FINALS AT DONCASTER

NATIONAL FINALS REPORT

Over 250 players from 50 counties met at the Doncaster Dome to take part in the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Championships on 26th April 2008. This event with eight age groups, organised by the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association, is the largest one day event in the table tennis calendar, with over 12 hours of continuous on 20 tables.

It was believed that Northamptonshire’s best hopes lay with their older and more experienced competitors Chris Doran Under19’s Boys, Charlotte Binley in the U19 girls and Jordan Wood  U16 girls.  The Wildman brothers Sam U16 boys and Tom U11 boys, together with Aaron Ark

U13 boys, Lauren Armstrong U13 girls and Nicole Bird U11 girls were all new to competition at this level and were there to enjoy the day and gain valuable match experience.

Chris Doran fresh from the World School Championships in Malta where he lost to the number 1 seed from China in the last 16 was seeded 2.  Doran progressed to the quarter finals where he lost unexpectedly in 3 straight sets to the number 8 seed Daniel Ives from Bristol.  Binley, Wood and Bird were competitive in their groups but just failed to make the knockout stages of the competition.  The other competitors found the going tough and were unable to progress from their groups.

A slightly disappointing day for Northamptonshire Schools was brightened by the performance of 11 year old Sam Mabey.  Sam attends school in Leicestershire but plays his county table tennis for Northamptonshire having started his career in the Northampton and Kettering Leagues.  Sam seeded 3 under the guidance of his coach Dave Welsman came through a 5 set thriller in the semi final winning 11-8 in the fifth set against the number 2 seed.  Sam played very well in the final but lost in 3 straight sets to the number 1 seed.

Schools Report Special:  Team Event

Regional Finals: 2/3 February 2008

The first weekend in February saw the Regional Finals of the English Schools Table Tennis Association Team Championships.  With girls and boys competing at U11, 13, 16 & 19 age groups this is a massive competition with the Regional Finals being staged at Blackburn, Cheltenham, Grantham and Southampton.  The County were honoured to have had 4 teams through to this stage of the competition.  To have reached this stage each team had already been crowned County Champions and been placed 1st or 2nd in the Zone Finals staged earlier in the season.

Southampton:

Duston U13 Boys:

Joe Burrows, Aaran Ark, Leon Chan, Adam Packman

Duston School’s 1st match was against Peniel School from Essex. Peniel have a 20year tradition in this competition and gave Duston a tough start as Duston lost 8-0.  In their 2nd match they had a cracking game drawing 4-4 with Deptford Green New Cross, Kent.  Duston were awarded the match on ‘countback’ with both teams having 15 ends each but Duston scoring 1 point more than their opponents. (That’s what you call a close match!!)

Cheltenham

Southfield School for Girls can be very proud that their students have managed to get teams in the U13 and U16 age group Finals

U13 Team: Lucy Budworth, Rebecca Tyler, Bethan Mullen, Sanita Taylor

U16 Team: Charlotte Binley, Beth Tyler, Hazel Tacklenberg, Lara Mullen

The U13 team suffered 2 heavy defeats at the hands of Peniel AScademy from Essex and Blackminster Middle, Evesham.

The U16’s lost their opening match 2-6 to Morpeth Tower Hamlets.  They then lost a tight match to Ilfracombe Arts College 3-5.  Chalotte Binley was unbeaten on the day and Beth Tyler won one.

Wollaston School

U19 team: Chris Doran. Dan Smalley, Jack Coleman, Nick Smalley and Brendon Tate

Wollaston School U19’s have won the National Final for the last 2 years.  They got off to a good start by defeating Bacons CTC, Rotherhithe, Surrey 6-2.

Their next match was against Peniel Academy.  This was a close affair and ended 4-4 in matches but Wollaston narrowly won 15-14 on ends won!

This meant the final match against Filton College, Bristol would decide who would progress to the National Finals.  Despite all players working hard this was one match too far and Wollaston went down 3-5.  Star of the day was undoubtedly England Ranked Junior No 7, Chris Doran who won all his matches without dropping an end.

At the Finals, last weekend (1st March) it was interesting to note that all Northamptonshire Teams had lost to the eventual winners of the whole competition!!!!!

On Sunday the champions of Northamptonshire travelled to Cheltenham Boys College in Gloucestershire where they did battle with the champions of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcershire and the West Midlands in the zone finals.

Paul Wood a prominent local player and teacher at Duston School was very pleased with the performances of his players despite two losses to Lawrence Sheriff School from Warwickshire and Droitwich from Worcestershire. Playing at a level not previously experienced his team of Aaron Ark, Joe Burrows, Tyler Carter, Ashley Starmer and Adam Packman battled hard. Special praise was given to Joe Burrows and Aaron Ark who both secured wins in the 2-6 defeat by Droitwich. Regrettably the local team from Gloucestershire failed to turn up in any of the age groups.

Mr Tony Love a teacher at Northampton School for Boys echoed Woods comments as his team of Jon Marsh, Jacko Roberts, Callum Lesley. Draper and Ryan Haskings also struggled at this level.

It was left to Wollaston U19 Boys team of Chris Doran, Daniel Smalley, Carl Lesson, Jack Coleman and Mark Judd to fly the flag for the county. A team who are the current U19 national champions dropped only 2 games in their 3 matches. This was a very strong team performance from the boys with 13 year old Jack Coleman making his debut at this level winning all his matches as did the current County Masters champion 15 year old Chris Doran and the ever improving 16 year old Daniel Smalley.

Wollaston together with Southfield school for Girls Kettering who were given a bye return to Cheltenham on Sunday 18th February. There they will contest the regional finals for a place in the National finals at Hinkley on Saturday 17th March for the honour of being crowned National Champions.

Wollaston School Report

as our sole representative in the Finals on March 11 2006

On Sunday February 19th Wollaston Boys Under 19 team took part in the English Schools Regional Team Finals at Cheltenham.

Again the boys were without their captain, Tim Yarnall and had to play Chesham High and Epsom College.  Our team consisted of Chris Doran, Dan Smalley, Matthew Horrocks and Carl Leeson.

The boys were trying to repeat last year’s success by reaching the National Finals (the top four teams in the country).

Our first match was against Epsom College and after a nervy start we did extremely well to win 7 – 1.  Chris Doran dropped just one game in wining his two matches.  Dan Smalley won two matches without loosing a game.  Matthew Horrocks won one out of his two matches beating the opposition number two.  Carl Leeson, playing at number four won both his matches, coming back from two down against the Epsom number 3.

This meant that if we could defeat Chesham High we would be in the National Finals for the second year running.

The boys played extremely well and their experience told as they won 6 – 2.  Again Carl Leeson won from two ends down and ended the day undefeated, as did our number one Chris Doran.

The whole team played extremely well and deserve their success.  Thank you to all the parents for their support.

We can now look forward to the National Finals at Hinckley on Saturday March 11th.

Can we do better than our third place last year?

 YES THEY CAN!!!

1st!!

Report

On Saturday 11th March Wollaston Under 19 Boys Table Tennis Team, led by Captain Chris Doran, won the school’s first National Team Championship at Hinckley Leisure Centre.  The team of Chris Doran, Dan Smalley, Matthew Horrocks and Carl Leeson took on the three best teams from England aiming to do better than our third place finish from last year.  Our first match was against Wickersley School and Sports College for South Yorkshire.  All four Wollaston players were on good form from the start and we won this match 6 – 2 (C. Doran 2, D. Smalley 1, M. Horrocks 1 and C. Leeson winning 2).

The next opponents were Peniel Academy from Essex.  Peneil narrowly defeated us in last years National Finals, so the boys were well motivated for this match.

Chris Doran started off with a good win but we soon went 3 – 1 down overall.  Chris won his second match impressively then Matthew Horrocks played the match of his life defeating the opposition number two and the talented Dan Smalley defeated Peneil number three making sure that we could not be beaten.

Peneil had lost to our final opponents so we knew that to win the title we had to defeat Barrow Sixth Form College from Cumbria, who had won their first two matches.   Again Chris Doran, playing superbly, won both of his matches and inspired Dan, Matthew and Carl to all win a match with Dan having the honouring of securing our

5 – 3 victory and first National title.  Looking at the records in the programme we believe that we are the first Table Tennis team from Northants to win a National Schools title in the forty years of the tournament.

Thank you to all the parents for their unstinting support.  I know that, like me, you are very proud of the Boys.

It truly was a team performance.

Well done and thank you.
